World Arthritis Day was on October 12th, it’s a global initiative to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. There are more than 100 types of arthritis that affect men, women and children. These conditions can have a long-term effect on muscle, bone and joints. Early detection is imperative to prevent irreversible damage.

Osteoarthritis (OA) also known as degenerative joint disease is the most common type of arthritis. It commonly affects older individuals; however due to certain risk factors, smoking, excessive weight, or overuse of joints, younger individuals may also be affected. Contrary to popular belief, moving and exercising are essential when living with arthritis! Exercise and weight loss help limit pain, and improve mobility and strength to better support joints. So, folks, find an exercise program or a friend and get moving!

October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is low bone density and strength which increases the likelihood of having fractures such as vertebral, hip, and wrist fractures. Once fracture occurs, osteoporosis increases the likelihood of having another fracture. This most commonly affects women especially those in menopause.

World Osteoporosis Day is to raise awareness about this condition and remind women to get screened for osteoporosis with a DEXA scan every two years beginning at 65, or sooner if there are risk factors. It is important to prevent Osteoporosis by eating foods rich in calcium and with Vitamin D supplementation. Staying active helps bone health and weight-bearing exercises are essential to build healthy bone.
